Broken Commitments Mold Lives
Matthew 26:31-35
The Last Supper has ended. Jesus shares that His time has come and all the disciples will desert Him.
“Even if everyone else deserts You, I will never desert You!!!”
Peter made his statement in sincerity. At the moment he was convinced that he would die for the Lord Jesus.
Yes, he was impetuous. But the Lord knew Peter’s heart. This time though, the Lord had to look Peter in the eye and give him the truth.
Peter is now backed into a corner. He goes into defensive mode. “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You!”
All the disciples said the same thing.
Jesus knew their hearts, but nothing would distract Him from His very purpose of taking on flesh to provide the ransom for sin.
I’ve seen commitments made the same way. Honestly, I’m sure I’ve made similar ones myself. The emotions of the moment overtake a clear head.
Yes, Peter broke his promise, but God didn’t. The result was Peter’s being broken. And after he was broken, he was never the same.
Don’t throw away people because they break commitments or you may be destroying a Peter or any of the other disciples.
God forgives. And when reality sets in, in Peter’s case seeing the resurrected Lord, the individual will be changed forever.
Stay faithful,
Van
Matthew 26:31–35 - Then Jesus said to them, “You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written, ‘I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered.’ 32 But after I have been raised, I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 33 But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away.” 34 Jesus said to him, “Truly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.” 35 Peter said to Him, “Even if I have to die with You, I will not deny You.” All the disciples said the same thing too.
