Psalm 121 - A Song of Ascents. 1 I will lift up my eyes to the mountains; From where shall my help come? 2 My help comes from the Lord, Who made heaven and earth. 3 He will not allow your foot to slip; He who keeps you will not slumber. 4 Behold, He who keeps Israel Will neither slumber nor sleep. 5 The Lord is your keeper; The Lord is your shade on your right hand. 6 The sun will not smite you by day, Nor the moon by night. 7 The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. 8 The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in From this time forth and forever. (NASB95)
Three times every year the Jews were to go to Jerusalem for a special occasion. They traveled in groups. Along the way they would sing. The songs they sang were called "Songs of Ascent" because they would always go "up to Jerusalem". Many of the Songs of Ascent were sung antiphonally (one section of the group would sing a question or phrase, and the other part of the group would answer.) More than just passing the time of the journey, the songs gave them great anticipation of the celebration that awaited them in Jerusalem.
Life is hard. Things happen and we don't have answers. But, we can always lift our eyes in anticipation of being in the presence of our LORD. Heaven awaits us. The LORD is our strength on the journey.
